Walter J. Coyer
Walter J. Coyer, Jr., 79, of Grove City, passed away at UPMC Magee Hospital in Pittsburgh on Tuesday, March 10, 2020, at 4:15 p.m. after a brief illness.
Walter was born in Grove City on Jan. 10, 1941, to Walter J. Coyer, Sr. and Isabella Mortensen Coyer, who both preceded him in death.
He was a 1959 graduate of Grove City High School. After high school, he served in the Navy from 1961 to 1964, where he was a plankowner on the USS Enterprise.
Walter was a member of North Liberty Church, F & AM #603, New Castle Consistory 32nd degree Mason, Ponoma Grange, State and National Granges, a 50-year-member of London Grange #1492. He was also an assistant Boy Scout Troop leader for Troop #41 in Grove City. Walter retired from Cooper Energy Service as a coremaker. After he left Cooper, he went to culinary school at Winner International in Transfer before working in Housekeeping at Grove City Hospital.
Walter is survived by his wife of 53 years, Valeria M. McQuiston Coyer, who he married on Jan. 7, 1967. He is also survived by his five children: Kenneth (Stephanie) Coyer in Raleigh, N.C.; G. Jeannine (James) Bowmer in Stoneboro; Rev. Jeremy (Katie) Coyer in Franklin, Pa.; Melanie (Larry) McElhinny in Grove City; and Clint Coyer and his fiancé Jaycee Filer in Grove City. One brother, Robert H. (Joan) Coyer in Grove City, one former son-in-law, Travis (Kelly) Thompson in Butler, Pa., and a special lady, Marian Dunkerly, Grove City, who was like family, also survive, as well as 15 grandchildren.
