A funeral is planned for Friday for Stephen N. "Big Steve" Golub Sr., of West Market Street, Mercer, who passed away unexpectedly at 11:47 a.m. Monday (6-23-08) in the emergency room of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 76. Mr. Golub was born on Sept. 14, 1931, in Farrell, the son of Ferko "Frank" and Anna Rok Golub. He was a 1950 graduate of Farrell High School. He retired from the former Sharon Steel Corp's Farrell plant, where he worked in the basic oxygen furnace as a melter with 42 years of service. While working at the Farrell mill, he furthered his education by studying metallurgy at Westminster College, New Wilmington. He loved bingo and was a member of the Apollo Maenerchor Club, Sharon, and the Croatian American Citizens Civic Club, Farrell. In addition to his companion of 20 years, Lizzy Ulan, with whom he lived, he leaves his children from his first marriage, a daughter, Stephanie N. Smith, of Sharon; five sons, Gerard C. Golub and his wife, Cheryl, of New Castle; Stephen N. Golub Jr., of Ormond Beach, Fla.; David M. Golub, of Sharon; Jeffrey T. Golub and his wife, Deborah, of Wheatland; Scott K. Golub and his wife, Angela, of Keyser, W.Va.; his children from his second marriage, a son, Neal A. Golub, of Sharpsville; and a daughter, Megan Myers and her husband, Josh, of South Carolina; 14 grandchildren, Courtney, Lindsay, Micaela, Christian, Rachael, Tara, Tyler, Jesse, Brianna, Hannah, Joshua, Alyssa, Mackenzie and Justin; and two great-granddaughters, Morgan and Raegan.
