Robert E. Hopkins of Hubbard died April 20, 2016, in Youngstown, Ohio.
He was born Feb. 11, 1917, in Scranton, Pa., the son of Evan R. and Edna Latcham Hopkins. He was "Bob" to all who knew him.
He was a graduate of Central High School in Scranton and Alderson-Broaddus College in Philippi, W.Va., and attended Crozer Theological Seminary in Chester, Pa.
He served in the Army Air Corps as a radio operator during World War II.
Bob was an ordained American Baptist minister, and he served as a pastor in Apollo, Pa. He returned to the Youngstown area, where he worked in the steel industry. He retired from the accounting department of LTV/Youngstown Sheet and Tube after 30 years of service. For 13 years, he was a bi-vocational pastor of Slope Congregational Church in Brookfield.
Bob was active in working with the American Baptist Churches in the Trumbull Association and at the state level, where he served on several boards.
He was an avid short wave radio operator and proficient at Morse code. He received the W.A.S. Award for making contacts in all 50 states. He was a volunteer income tax preparer for the AARP, a volunteer driver for the senior citizens van in Hubbard, and a member of the Cortland (Ohio) Conservation Club, where he served as secretary for many years.
Bob was a dedicated family man and enjoyed sharing stories of his adventures in life with his children and grandchildren. His interests included playing euchre and bridge, at which he was an expert. He loved boating, fishing, swimming and gardening. Robert enjoyed the challenge of building things, including radio-controlled boats and airplanes, doll houses and erector sets.
Bob is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Miriam; sons, Marc (Francine) of Santa Clara, Calif.; Stephen of Lancaster, Ohio; David (Connie) of Louisville, Ky.; and Daniel of Hockessin, Del.; son-in-law, William Hinkle of Sistersville, W.Va.; grandchildren, Kathryn (Russell) Woods of Sanford, N.C.; Kenneth Hopkins of Brooklyn; Elizabeth Hopkins of Austin, Texas; Maddie Hopkins of Waterbury, Vt.; Emily Lumpkin of Sistersville, W.Va.; Paula Ghita of Pickerington, Ohio; and Evan Hopkins of Pickerington, Ohio; great-grandchildren, Jody Williams, Sophia Woods, and Guy Woods, all of Sanford, N.C.; and his special cat, Moses.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Edna Hopkins, who died following his birth in 1917; his father, Evan Hopkins, who died in 1982; a half-sister, Evelyn; and his daughter Lynn Ann (William) Hinkle, who died in 2013.
