John C. Hrapchak, 76, of Surprise, Ariz., passed away on Tuesday, March 22, 2022, at Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center in Sun City West, Ariz.
John was born in Central City to the late Charles and Anna (Smolen) Hrapchak. After high school, he attended Virginia Tech, graduating with a BS degree in architectural engineering.
He fulfilled a four-year Air Force commitment at Williams Air Force Base in Arizona, eventually obtaining the rank of captain. Upon completing his military service, John joined Daniel International Corporation, a major engineering and construction firm headquartered in Greenville, S.C. He worked at construction sites in Carrolton, Ga., and at the Callaway Nuclear Plant in Fulton, Mo.
John and Sheila (Kraynok) were married on Sept. 18, 1982, in Sharon. After beginning their marriage in Columbia, Mo., John accepted a position with the Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District.
The move to Maryland brought them closer to their families and to Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church in Potomac, Md. There, John served as the president of the ACRY, was the chairman of the 1998 ACRY National Convention and was the church council president for 15 years.
In February of 1999, John was installed as archon and member of the Order of Saint Andrew, at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral in New York City.
In December 2009, John was elected to the Orthodox Christian Mission Center Board and currently served as the co-chairman of the Governance Committee.
After retirement from federal government service in 2014, John and Sheila relocated to Surprise, Ariz., in 2015, where they enjoyed living in the Sun City Grand Community. John was active as a volunteer for the spring training baseball games, other veteran activities, and enjoyed being a part of the stitchers Club, doing machine embroidery.
Visitation: 9 to 11 a.m. Monday (3-28-22) at St. John's Orthodox Church, 3180 Morefield Road, Hermitage.
Funeral service: 11 a.m. Monday at the church, with Fr. David Mastroberte.
Interment: St. John's Orthodox Cemetery, following the service.
