On Tuesday morning, Aug. 13, 2024, Jeffrey Alan Briggs of Hadley, Pa., passed away suddenly at his home. He was 67.
Jeffrey was born Sept. 19, 1956, in Youngstown, Ohio, to Harold and Frances (Clark) Briggs of Brookfield, Ohio.
He attended elementary school at Brookfield and later at Stoneboro, Pa., and graduated from Lakeview High School in 1974.
Following this, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and graduated from the Naval Academy in 1980. Also in 1980, he married his sweetheart, Cynthia Waybright, Lakeview Class of 1977.
In his Naval service, Jeffrey flew F18 Hornets in the Grenada, Beirut, Bosnia, and Iraq conflicts. In addition, he was given the great honor of participating in a foreign exchange program with France.
He and his growing family lived in Carqueiranne, France, and later in Paris while he flew in a French squadron and attended French War College.
Commander Briggs retired from the Navy in 1998.
It was always Jeffrey's desire to move his family "back home" to Pennsylvania. This dream became reality when he accepted a position as teacher at Commodore Perry High School in Hadley.
During his illustrious time as a "Panther," he was a beloved teacher of math and science, a coach and athletic director. "Mr. Briggs" was awarded Teacher of the Year on multiple occasions.
Jeffrey led a full life. In addition to teaching, he played keyboards and sang in church for many years at Clarks Mills Methodist Church, and recently at Oak Grove Church.
He was also an avid marksman and enjoyed going on "shoots."
But perhaps his greatest accomplishment was raising each of his four children, who all went on to serve their country in the Armed Forces.
Jeffrey was preceded in death by his father and his wife.
He is survived by his mother; sisters, Jennifer (David) Waybright, Laura (Tim) Shillito, and Amy (Harold) Longmore; children, Michael (Meghan), Lindsey Miller (Jacob), Daniel (Meagan), and Katherine; nine grandchildren, Avery Briggs, Brianne Miller, Jacob Miller Jr., Carolynn Miller, Elizabeth Miller, Hudson Briggs, Logan Briggs, Mason Briggs, and Ian Briggs; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
