James R. Judy Obituary

James R. Judy, of Washington, D.C., formerly of Brookfield, passed away Saturday, July 30, in the Armed Forces Retirement Home, where he had resided for the past year. He was 84.

James was born April 19, 1932, in Somerset, Pa., a son of Walter H. and Margaret E. Caton Judy.

He graduated from Somerset High School and went on to serve in the U.S. Navy.

Following his discharge from the Navy, James attended Kent State University. After receiving his bachelor's degree in history, he taught history at Kent State for one year. He later received his master's degree in psychology. He then became administrator at Glassboro State College, New Jersey, for 10 years. He also worked for the state of New Jersey in developing two new state colleges.

James became vice president and acting president of Stockton State College in Pomona, N.J., and became dean of students at Thiel College, Greenville. After leaving Thiel College, James owned and operated Judy Bike Center in Greenville.

He had been a lay person for numerous churches for many years before becoming an ordained Lutheran pastor at the age of 78. James had served three churches in northwestern Pennsylvania and served as an assistant pastor at Christ Lutheran Church in Washington, D.C. He was a former member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Greenville, and most recently a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Washington.

James led a very active life and belonged to many clubs and organizations throughout his life. James liked to be busy, and became very involved in the activities at the Armed Forces Home, where he had been named volunteer of the month. He had touched a lot of lives and will be dearly missed.

His wife, the former Margretta R. Bletzer, whom he married Aug. 1, 1957, died Nov. 21, 2014.

He leaves two sons, James (Diana) Judy, Brookfield; and Jon (Sue) Judy, Egg Harbor Township, N.J.; three grandchildren, Amy (Andy) Junkins, Whitney Judy and James Michael Judy; and two stepgrandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and his wife, James was preceded in death by 12 brothers and sisters.
