EvaN Ronald Thompson (Ron) Obituary
Evan Ronald Thompson, Fredonia, passed away Tuesday evening, July 13, 2021 at UPMC Horizon, Greenville. He was 85.
He was born in Oniontown (Delaware Township) on Aug. 17, 1935, a son of the late Evan L. and Martha (Reichard) Thompson. He was raised in Mercer, until his family relocated to Fredonia.
He graduated from the former Fredonia-Delaware High School, where he played the clarinet in the band and sang.
On Jan. 24, 1959, he married the former Shirley Nagel, who survives.
Ron had been a truck driver working for the family business, Thompson Concrete Products, Fredonia, for over 40 years and later for Seidle Sand and Gravel and Munnell Trucking, Fredonia.
He was raised as a member of the former St. John's Church then attended the Coolspring Presbyterian Church and later the Fredonia Presbyterian Church, where he sang in the choir and was admired for his deep bass voice and often had requests to sing "How Great Thou Art."
He cherished his truck-driving days. Having spent most of his career driving truck for his father's concrete business, Ron possessed amazing skills at being able to back up his truck.
He was a former member of the Fredonia Volunteer Fire Department and the Harthegig Conservation Club. He had served on Fredonia Borough Council and went onto become the tax collector for Fredonia borough and Reynolds School District for 26 years. He always enjoyed his visits from community taxpayers and was quite the conversationalist.
He was known for his sweet convertibles and the questionable speeds at which he drove, yet the Blue Star Mothers would race to ride in his car at the various community parades to experience his smooth riding capabilities.
He was meticulous in caring for his lawn, was a crossword puzzle fanatic, and could always be found with a puzzle book in hand. He was a hardworking, dedicated and honest gentleman and possessed a deep and abiding Christian faith, turning to the Lord during his trials and tribulations.
He is survived by his wife Shirley; his daughter Tammy Thompson, Fredonia; a sister, Dr. Carol Smith, Mechanicsburg and her sons Tim and Todd; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Robert Fisher.
