Hermitage, Pennsylvania - Daniel Walter Settle, 88, of Hermitage, passed away at St. Paul's in Greenville on Wednesday, April 16, 2025.

Dan was born in Wheatland Sept. 16, 1936, to Charles Edward and Thelma Marie McCurdy Settle.

Daniel married Helma Wenz Settle, who preceded him in death in 2007. He married Nancy DeGrange, Dec. 31, 2016.

He attended Farrell High School before enlisting into the U.S. Army in 1953. Daniel rose to the rank of SFC E-7 prior to being accepted to the US Army Artillery and Missile Officer Candidate School in Fort Sill, Okla., graduating in 1965 and commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant. Dan completed 8th Infantry Division Airborne School in 1967.

A decorated US Army veteran, Captain Settle was awarded a Silver Star, two bronze stars and a Purple Heart for his courage and valor in 1968 while serving company C, 8th Battalion 6th Artillery 1st Infantry division at Fire Support Base Rita, Vietnam.

Daniel retired from the U.S. Army in June 1975 while living in Germany with his family. He continued working for the DOD Housing Management in Fort Belvoir, Va., until his retirement in 1995.

Wanderlust had him travel the world, visiting all but five U.S. states, many countries in Europe, Japan, Korea, Thailand including two return visits to postwar Vietnam.

He loved hunting and fishing and was president of the Angler club in Ingelheim, Germany. While in Germany, he discovered a new hobby — collecting and repairing antique clocks.

Fort Myers Beach, Fla., was his favorite place to be during the long Pennsylvania winter months. He and his wife Nancy loved their home overlooking the lake and dining at their favorite seafood restaurants.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy (DeGrange) Settle; daughter Baerbel (Chris) Brisbane, Jim Thorpe; grandsons Daniel (Jennifer) Brisbane and Michael (Amber) Brisbane; granddaughters Stephanie Polzer and Elizabeth Alonzo; great-grandsons, Logan Wills, Jackson and Carson Brisbane; sisters-in-law Rose Settle and Shirley Settle; stepchildren Cindy (Carl) Wombacker, Tom (Cindy) Hyland, Terri (Glen) Peterson, Sandy (Taylor) Hyland and Mike (Pam) Hyland; 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Daniel was preceded in death by his first wife, Helma Settle; daughter Brenda (Ronny) Trefftzs; siblings Beatrice Foster, Twila Weiser, Inez Wasko, Delores Sewall, Charles Settle, Virginia Sadowski, Earl and Paul Settle.

Calling hours: 10 a.m. to noon Saturday (4-26-25) at The SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 310 Wt Neshannock Ave, New Wilmington.

Service: Noo, Saturday at the funeral home.

Interment: 1:30 p.m. Saturday, with full military honors, at Millbank Cemetery, Fredonia.
