Chester "Chet"'s Story
Chester R. "Chet" Powell, Burghill, Ohio, was called by the Lord to his eternal Home on Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2017, from St. Pauls in Greenville after a brief illness. He was 85.
Chet was born March 30, 1932, in Sharon, a son of the late Oscar Powell and the late Caressa Pilgrim Powell.
He graduated from Hickory High School in 1951.
Chet worked at Thornton Hall as a mechanic for 35 years, retiring in 1996, and was pastor of Sovereign Grace Baptist Church in Cortland, Ohio, for 27 years.
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1956 during the Korean Conflict serving on the USS Sennet SS 408 and the USS Corporal submarines.
Chet was an avid Cleveland Browns and Indians fan. He enjoyed the great outdoors and most of all, spending time with his family and friends.
He married Adrienne Elaine (Rust) Powell on March 21, 1959. She survives at home. Also surviving are a daughter, Tami Elser and her husband Douglas of Kinsman; four sons, Jeffrey Powell of Ashtabula, Ohio, Douglas Powell of Burghill, Jonathan Powell and his wife Tracy of Greenville and Bradley Powell and his wife Heather of Chardon, Ohio; and six grandchildren, Hannah, Jared, Caeley and Kara Powell and Tyler and Lauren Elser.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, F. Wayne and Lawrence Powell; and a stepgrandson, Michael Diehl.
