William R. Owens


William Robert Owens, 84, of New Wilmington, went to be with his savior on April 21, 2016 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh. He was born on July 9, 1931 to the late Edward James and Wilma Mae Adams Owens. He married the late Jeane Evelyn Tucker on December 18, 1971. Mr. Owens was a United States Veteran and served his country during the Korean War. Bill graduated from Grove City College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce and later received his Master’s Degree from the University of Iowa in Office Management and Business Education. Over the years, Mr. Owens served as an Office Management Accountant and Business Education Systems Analyst, and as a teacher and business manager for the Laurel School District. Music was very influential in his life, and he often enjoyed singing around his community at various events. In the early years of marriage, he enjoyed singing duets with his late wife, Jeane. He served as the director of music, at one point, for First Alliance Church in New Castle. His later years were spent directing music at the New Wilmington Alliance Church where he also served as Head Elder. Mr. Owens was very active in his church, and following the Lord and showing his love of Christ was important to him. He also served as a member of the Free and Accepted Masons of Pennsylvania.
Bill is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca M. Owens Smith and James G. Smith, of Bethel Park, PA; one sister and brother-in-law, Margaret J. and Jay H. Reynolds of Little Silver, NJ; one brother, Darrell J. Owens, and one grandson.
In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Owens is preceded in passing by two brothers, Edward J. and Albert J. Owens, both of New Castle.
Visitation will be held on Monday from 4-7 pm at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Rd.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 am, with visitation prior from 10-11 am, at First Alliance Church. Pastor John Grusendorf of New Wilmington Alliance Church will officiate. Burial will take place in Greenwood Cemetery.
