Wilford's Story

Wilford E. Hammond Jr., 90, entered eternal life on Thursday, Sept. 21, 2017, at 9:05 p.m. in Harvey, Ill.
The Brooklyn, N.Y., native was born May 1, 1927, to Wilford E. and Mary (McLaurin) Hammond.
To all who knew and loved him, he was affectionately called "Bobby."
Mr. Hammond moved to Farrell at an early age and was raised by Momma Trudie (Azalee Powe Ford) and Daisy (Robinson) Hammond.
Growing up as a young teenager in Farrell, he loved the game of basketball and became an outstanding basketball player. He graduated from Farrell High School in 1945. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy and served during World War II. He is listed as a World War II veteran at the Naval Memorial in Washington, D.C.
Bobby also served as a state trooper for the commonwealth of Pennsylvania during the 1950s and later served as a congressional assistant to the late U.S. Rep. Carroll Kearns.
He also was employed at the former Sharon Steel Corp. in Farrell for many years until retirement. He also remodeled various homes, churches and businesses within and outside of Pennsylvania. He also ran the Rumpus Room on Broadway Avenue in Farrell, a teen club, with James "Jimmie" Robinson
In his later years, he volunteered at the Buhl Club in Sharon several days a week.
He also was a faithful member of Second Missionary Baptist Church in Farrell.
Mr. Hammond was an avid sports enthusiast and follower of Farrell High School and LeBron "King James" James of the Cleveland Cavaliers. Bobby followed King James when he was a teenager in high school in Akron. He always had time and a word of encouragement for many young men wherever he went.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Hammond was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret (Bears) Hammond, to whom he was married for many years; and three brothers, John R. Hammond, Rudolph Hammond and Ronald Hammond.
He is survived by his wife, Esther (Simmons) Hammond of Illinois; three daughters, Mary A. Hammond of Bowie, Md., Kimberly A. Doss of Farrell and Crystal L. (Martin) Taylor of Shenango; three sons, Robert Craig Hammond of Bowie, Md., and Mark Hopson and Eric Hopson, both of Farrell; three sisters, Delores Everett, Shirley Catlett and Carolyn Hammond, all of New Jersey; three brothers, Alphonso James and his wife, Almeda, of Farrell, and Reginald Hammond and his wife, Carol, and Wayne Hammond, all of New Jersey; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral: 11 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Russell V. Penn, church pastor, as the eulogist.
