Sophie Marie Kocis, 97, of North Charleston, S.C., died peacefully on Sept. 3, 2017.
She was the daughter of the late Szymon and Judwiga Kustron and was born March 27, 1920, in Farrell.
She was married to the late George Kocis on April 19, 1941. He died on Jan. 3, 1985. Together they raised three children, Georgianne (Mike) Sujka, with whom she lived for the last seven years; Robert (Linda) Kocis in Post Fall, Idaho; and Stevan (Gert) Kocis of Sharon.
Before moving to North Charleston, Sophie made her home in Shenango Township, and was a member of the Church of The Good Shepherd in West Middlesex. There she quilted, catered, sang in the church choir and volunteered on various committees, including the Altar Rosary Society. At 80, Sophie drove the "old people" to church. As a loving mother, she was an accomplished baker and seamstress, making most of the family clothing. Sophie's cup was always half-full, never empty, and she taught her family that forgiveness brings peace and love.
Besides her children, Sophie leaves behind five grandchildren: Susan (Mac) Baughman, Michael (Theresa) Sujka, Christine (Bryan) Dukes, Rob (Ester) Kocis and Lauri (Dave) Ince. She had eight great-grandchildren, Hunter, Kinsey, Will, Kate, Andrew, Natalie, Faye and Nova.
She is survived by a sister, Helen Telega; and several nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Mrozek, and Stella Korpa; and four brothers, Stanley, Teddy, Wally and Raymond.
Sophie, while living in North Charleston, was a member of St. Thomas The Apostle Catholic Church.
In lieu of flowers please make any memorial donations to any of the hurricane relief efforts or to your charity of choice.
