Robert Daniel Townsend
Bobby was born July 13, 1947, in Sharon, a son of Robert Townsend Jr. and Kathleen Allen Townsend.
He was employed for 27 years at the former Sharon Steel Corp.'s Farrell plant, working many years in the scarfing yard. Following the closing of Sharon Steel, he worked as an at-risk adviser for the Farrell Area School District for 13 years.
Bobby was an avid NBA basketball fan. He always said there was a basketball game on 24/7 somewhere in the world. In his younger days, he coached many youth basketball and midget football teams. He, himself, was a member of the "Over-the-Hill" basketball team, playing in numerous Gus Macker 3-on-3 tournaments.
Bobby will always be remembered for being the "photographer of the valley," taking numerous candid pictures. His specialty was wedding photos and videos.
He was a Vietnam War Veteran (1st Battalion, 4th Infantry) from 1966 to his honorable discharge in 1968 as an SP4 (T), serving in Germany.
As a member of Ruth African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, Sharon, he previously served as a trustee, and prior to his recent illness, served on the Usher Board. Bobby was also a dedicated Prince of Peace volunteer (with the volunteers of Ruth A.M.E. Zion Church serving meals at the local social services agency).
He leaves to cherish his memory, his daughters, Sonya K. Townsend, Sharon, and Rolaunda C. Johnson (Lloyd), New Castle; his sons, Robert Q. Townsend (his fiancée, Tamie), Charleroi, Pa., and Richard D. Townsend (Nicole), Phoenix, Ariz.; his sister, Christine A. Ridley, Brooklyn, N.Y.; his stepmother, Dorothy Askerneese Townsend, Forest Hills; 10 grandchildren, Brittany Townsend, Jasmine Townsend, Cherade Townsend, Shantel Townsend, Desmonde Jennings, Destinee Jennings, Daysha Jennings, Mykia Townsend-Strozier, Jourdan Townsend and Ashton Crooks; two step-grandchildren, Dayisa Nunn and Deotis Nunn; 15 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Bobby was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Nelson C. Townsend; his companion, Betty Jones; and a great-grandson, Noah-Divine Dungee.
