Robert "Bob"'s Story
Robert "Bob" McDade, 91, of Christy Road, Hermitage, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2017.
Bob was born Oct. 7, 1925, in Sharon to Robert W. McDade and Gladys Miller McDade.
A lifelong area resident, Mr. McDade was a 1943 graduate of Sharon High School.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1943 to 1946. He was an aviation machinist and flew PBY aircrafts, of which he was proud.
Upon his return, he attended Penn State and received an associate's degree in mechanical engineering. He also attended Youngstown State University and Westminister College.
Mr. McDade began his career with Sharon Steel Corp. in 1950 and was trained as a machinist. He advanced to millwright foreman, general foreman and assistant superintendent before becoming superintendent of mechanical and electrical maintenance. His last position was assistant general superintendent of maintenance and utilities, which he held for 11 years, retiring in 1985.
Bob then had his own consultant business, Ram Services.
After his retirement, Bob and his wife enjoyed traveling and going to casinos. They spent many winters in Florida.
Active in children's work, Mr. McDade served eight years as a grade school coach at Wengler School for the Shenango Valley Jaycees' basketball program.
He was also an exceptional golfer, winning many tournaments and trophies.
He married his beloved wife, Mary Lou Wood, on Dec. 21, 1946. She passed away Sept. 21, 1995.
Bob was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, who adored his family.
Surviving are: two daughters, Mary Lee Shaffer and her husband James, of Hermitage, with whom Bob made his home since 2003, and Kathy Kauer and her husband, John of South Carolina; two grandsons, Mark Robert Shaffer of Sharon, and James Alan Shaffer of Hermitage; and a granddaughter, Roberta Reutener of Ohio.
Bob was preceded in death by his brother, Paul McDade.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
