Michael Vasil, 93, of Hermitage, passed away peacefully on Friday Nov. 24, 2017, at St. John XXIII Nursing Home, Hermitage.
Michael was born in Farrell Oct. 28, 1924, to John and Anna (Ostoverhy) Vasil.
Michael left school early to begin working at Westinghouse, but soon after headed to Buffalo, N.Y., to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served honorably in the Pacific Theater of World War II for MAG-61 (Marine Air Group). He was a mechanic on various islands maintaining PBJ bombers (B-25s) for VMB-612 as one of the "Rams" under the command of Lt. Col. Jack R. Cram. He returned to Sharon after discharge as a sergeant and resumed working at Westinghouse until retirement with 42 years of service.
On Jan. 11, 1958, he married his wife, the late Irene (Kosty) Vasil. They settled in Hermitage and raised two sons.
He enjoyed football, art, his Carpatho Rusyn heritage, and the outdoors including hunting, fishing and mushroom picking earlier in life. Later, he could be seen walking miles in the area of his home. He spent many hours caring for his home, one of the first in the "rural" Hickory Township area of Holly Lane. Michael was an avid reader unlimited by the author or topic. Most of his time later in life centered around his granddaughters.
He was a member of St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church in Hermitage and the American Legion.
Michael is survived by two sons, Michael J. Vasil and wife Suzanne of Hermitage and Daniel J. Vasil and wife Kimberly of St. Charles, Ill.; his special granddaughters, Kristiana, Alyssa, Kayleen, and Karina; and two brothers, John P. Vasil of Hermitage, and Norbert P. Vasil of Sharon.
