Mary Rose's Story

Mary Rose Philson Gustafson, 78, of Jackson Center, passed away Monday morning (Feb. 5, 2018) at St. Paul Homes in Greenville.
Mary was born in Fairview Township, Mercer County, on Aug. 16, 1939, to the late John Alban and Margaret Nancy Kitch Philson.
Mary was a 1957 graduate of Lakeview High School and then started working for Bell Telephone Co. in Mercer and Meadville as a long distance operator, retiring in 1980. She was then employed in 1982 by Adessa Auto Auction as a notary.
Mary married her beloved husband, William Leroy "Bill" Gustafson on May 19, 1975. He survives.
Mary was an opinionated woman who would let you know how she felt. She loved to grow flowers and ride horses. She was a life member of the Bell Telephone Pioneers, a national organization. She also loved Elvis and was enjoying his music into her last days.
Her nieces and nephews were her world, and she enjoyed spending time with them. She loved her swimming pool and taught all her nieces and nephews to swim. If they could make it across the pool they would get a prize.
Mary is survived by: three stepsons, Thomas, Randall and Timothy Gustafson and their families; one sister, Nancy Walters of Delano; and one brother, Scott Philson and his wife, Peggy, of Fredonia. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, with whom she was very close.
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by: her sisters, Dolores Linn and Norma Philson; and her brothers, Robert "Bob," David "Dave," John "Jack," and James "Jim" Philson.
