Mary Lou's Story

Mary Lou (Graham) Bortz of Mercer passed away peacefully with her family by her side at 1:21 a.m. Sunday (Sept. 24, 2017) at home. She was 77.
Born Oct. 10, 1939, in Sewickley, she was a daughter of Paul E. and Henrietta W. "Hettie" Grantham Graham.
She was a 1958 Lakeview High School graduate and a graduate from Sharon Beauty Academy.
Mary Lou had a career as a beautician for many years and also had worked as a secretary for Mercer Borough. She also worked at the former Magoffin House of Mercer.
She was an active and devoted member of Bethany Presbyterian Church, Mercer, and served as a deacon.
Mary Lou was a worker and organizer of many things, including being a member and treasurer of Rocky Grove Women's Club, Franklin, and Women's Golf League at Mercer Public Course. She continued her role as Class of 1958 treasurer and, along with classmate Virginia Amos, co-founded and organized the Lakeview Alumni Association as it is known today.
She enjoyed bowling and playing in the card clubs at Lake Latonka. She kept an immaculate flower garden that she was very proud of.
Of her many accomplishments, she was most proud of her family and loved to cook for them and have family gatherings. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be sadly missed.
Her husband of 58 years, Richard M. "Dick" Bortz, whom she married Aug. 15, 1959, survives at home. Also surviving are: a daughter, DeAnn M. (David) McCullough, Sharpsville; two sons, Richard G. "Dick" (Wendy) Bortz of Clarks Mills, and Douglas P. (Janet) Bortz of South Lyon, Mich., six grandchildren, Justine McCullough and her fiance, Andy Rozal, Jenna (Eric) Redmond, Derek (Leah) Bortz and Trevor, Daniel and Matthew Bortz; a great-granddaughter, Felicity Redmond; two sisters, Doris Feather of Franklin, and Polly Kimes (Tom Beahan) of Sandy Lake; and a brother John "Jack" (Barbara) Minshull of Middleton, Del.
She was preceded in death by: her father, mother Henrietta Graham Minshull; and stepfather Herbert Minshull.

Service: Memorial service at 11 a.m. Saturday in the church, with the Rev. Dr. Peter Dembroski, pastor, and former pastor August P. Hurst co-officiating.
