Keith's Story

Text size

Keith Emerson Woods left his earthly home in exchange for his heavenly home on the evening of Dec. 17, 2017.
Keith was born Aug. 9, 1957, to Charles and Ruth (Cooper) Woods of Mercer. He was a graduate of Mercer High School where he was a standout athlete in basketball. He also threw discus and shot put and acquired a love for the sport. Keith played for various softball teams through out the years and was a homerun hitter.
His mother introduced him to his wife, Donna, who was a nursing student of hers. They wed on May 16, 1981. Together, they enjoyed many traveling adventures, including three cross-country trips and numerous vacations to Walt Disney World. They also enjoyed traveling to their children's college sporting events.
Keith loved the Lord and was a member of First Assembly of God church in Hermitage, where he would occasionally appear in a skit. Next to his family and his faith, Keith's passion was coaching. He had coached shot put and discus at Hickory High School since 2002 and developed 17 state champions including his own children, although he thought of all of his athletes as his children. He built a throwing ring in his yard, and it was common to see several young athletes at his home on any given day, 12 months out of the year. Not only did Keith teach them about the sport, but he also taught them how to become their best in life. You could always see Keith at the meets wearing his large-brimmed Amish straw hat.
Keith formerly worked at PJ Schmidt and together with his wife, opened Pizza Joe's in downtown Sharon in 1987.
Keith was a joker and loved a good laugh. He could strike up a conversation with anyone, at anytime, about anything. No one was a stranger. He will be missed by many.
Besides his wife and parents, Keith is survived by his four children, Erin (Steve) Heywood of Sharon, Ben (Chelsea) Woods of East Aurora, N.Y., Emily (Logan) Elliston of Hubbard, Ohio, and Taylor Woods, a student at the University of Tennessee; six grandchildren, Samantha and Daniel Heywood, Nathan, Luke and Connor Woods and Liam Elliston, all of whom were his pride and joy and he couldn't wait to teach them his sport.
He also has three siblings, Becky (Chuck) Bolyard; Ken (Linda) Woods; and Amy (Joe) Marshall; his mother-in-law Doris Dickey; sister-in-laws Debbie (John) Grundy and Darlene (Kevin) Washington; and many nieces and nephews.
Keith was preceded in death by his father-in-law, James Dickey, who greeted him at heaven's gates.
For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and give His life as a ransom for many. Mark 10:45.
