The Rev. James Ernest Erb, Cowden Road, New Wilmington, passed away at Orchard Manor Nursing Home, Grove City, on Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 13, 2017. He was 83.
Rev. Erb was born in West Middlesex on June 7, 1934, to the late Maynard Locke and Sara Jane Edeburn Erb. He married Janice Lee Bartholomew on Aug. 29, 1956. She survives at the residence.
Rev. Erb graduated from West Middlesex High School in 1952, Penn State University in 1956, and Asbury Theological Seminary in 1960. He and his wife served as missionaries in the Philippines, then he served as pastor for the Barn Ministries in Mercer from 1971 until 1976. He was then the first pastor at Living Word Church in New Wilmington and helped to found RHEMA Christian Academy. Rev. Erb also founded the Antioch International Ministries.
After retirement from Living Word, he pastored at Pleasant Valley Church in Niles, Ohio, for 6 years. James had a very giving and generous heart. He and his wife opened up their home for ministering to many over the years. He especially had a heart for the local young adults. He was a spiritual father and grandfather to many.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two daughters: Julie Clarke of Mercer, Janeen Weisman (John) of Warren, Ohio, and one son: Jeffrie Erb (Diana) of Utica, Ky. Also surviving are three sisters: Mary Stafford, Hermitage, Esther Sanderbeck of West Middlesex, and Julie Moore of Akron, Ohio; and one brother: John Erb of Lady Lake, Fla. Completing the family are nine grandchildren: Phillip Erb, Olivia Gold, Isaac Weisman, Lucas Clarke, McKenzie Clarke, John-Mark Weisman, Logan Clarke, Lydia Tarleton, and Jonah Weisman and three great-grandchildren: Chase Boling, Averie Weisman, and Jude Gold.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward and David Erb, and three sisters, Helen Richardson, Mary Stafford, and Sara Mae Miller.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Victory Christian Center, New Wilmington Campus.
