Harvey L. Newby Sr., 80, of Sharon, answered the call of the Lord to come home on Monday, Sept. 18, 2017.
Born May 12, 1937, in Huntsville, Ala., he was the son of Laura Mae Harden Newby and Willie Walter Newby Jr.
He attended Council Training in Huntsville where his gift in the arts was developed.
He moved to the Shenango Valley in 1965.
Known to work multiple jobs simultaneously, he worked many years as a mechanic, painter, truck driver for Coca Cola and as the head cook at many restaurants throughout Alabama. He worked as a welder for GATX in Masury, retiring in 1984.
Mr. Newby accepted Jesus Christ at an early age. A self-taught guitar and keyboard player, he was a founding member of the professional gospel group, The Heavenaires, recording several songs. He was ordained a deacon by his brother, the late Rev. Dr. William Newby Jr. at Friendship Baptist Church, Farrell. He later united with Second Baptist Church, Sharpsville.
Well-rounded, his hobbies included fishing, jigsaw puzzles, brainteasers, "games of chances," singing country music and sightseeing while taking long rides in the country. He took special interest with his many friends in downtown Sharon, where he never met a stranger.
He is survived by his former wife, Johnnie K. Newby and their five children, Joan K. Lester of Sharon, Harvey L. Newby Jr. of Farrell, Robert N. Newby of Sharon, JoAnn Campbell and her fiance, Donald Weller, of Farrell and Pamela L. (Darrell) McKoy of Hermitage; siblings, Robert E. Newby, Henry E. (Overseer Flora) Newby, Dorothy L. Newby Chester and Robert (Bobby) Newby, all of the Shenango Valley; two godsons, Kelvin and Kurt Chester; eight grandchildren, Darrell N. McKoy Jr., Annise S. Ogada, Stacia Brooks, Jonisha V. Henderson, Jon K. Hunter, Marcedes Newby, Melanie Newby and Dominique D. McKoy; 11 great-grandchildren, Brooklyn, Mia, Amila, Lauren, Cordell, Ernie Jr., Frank, Nathan, Darrell III, Gordon Jr. and Elijah; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, other relatives and friends.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, the Rev. Dr. William Newby and Larry D. Newby; five sisters, Richetta A. Thomas, Fannie Mae Chester, Brenda J. Reno and two infant sisters, Geneva and Suedale; and a great-grandchild, Maddie Mae Hunter.

Calling hours: 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. Friday (9-22-17) in Valley Baptist Church, Farrell.
Funeral: 11 a.m. Friday in the church, with the Rev. T. James Harrison, pastor, as eulogist, and the Rev. James McKeithan, pastor of Second Baptist Church, officiating. Family will also receive friends at the home of his daughter, Pamela, 3315 Timber Lane, Hermitage.
Burial: Oakwood Cemetery, Hermitage.
