Gloria Fisher Blank, 94, of Hermitage, passed away Thursday (Feb. 1, 2018) at St. Paul's, West Salem Township.
Gloria was born on Jan. 26, 1924, in Johnstown, Pa., to Mini and Curtis Fisher.
She was a 1942 graduate of Johnstown High School. During high school she played the oboe in the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra and marched in the high school band, which won the state championship her senior year.
During World War II she studied math education at the University of Michigan and became a high school teacher.
After the war she married John Edward Blank of Johnstown on Feb. 9, 1946.
When Gloria was 47 she successfully soloed in a Cessna 150 aircraft.
She started the Glory B. Bookstore, the first Christian bookstore in the Shenango Valley. She later enrolled in a nursing program at Youngstown State University where she completed an RN degree, and later completed an MS degree in social work. She spent more than a decade working as a case worker for the Mercer County Agency on Aging. After she retired she spent many years working in prison ministries, until macular degeneration took away her eyesight.
In February of 2016 she and her husband John celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.
Gloria is survived by: her daughter, Sandra Lafontaine of Agawam, Mass.; sons David Blank and his wife Sandy of Arnold, Md., Brian Blank and his wife Mary Sue of Garner, N.C., and Bruce Blank and his wife Anita of Gaithersburg, Md.; a son-in-law, Brian O'Neil of Sharon; granddaughters Natalie Blank, Rebekah Blank, Ariella Blank, and Emma Krenzin-Blank; grandsons Christopher Lezama, Trevor Blank, Jonerik Blank, Donald Blank and Ean Krenzin-Blank; and a great-granddaughter, Molly Evans.
She was preceded in death by: her husband John; sons Randal Blank and Donald Blank; and daughter, Christine O'Neil. Her son "Don" is still remembered as as local legend and for being an all-American in water skiing.
