Gary Eugene Webster, 74, of Grove City, passed away on Monday morning Jan. 8, 2018, at home.
Gary was born in Grove City on Dec. 9, 1943, to James and Marie (Surrena) Webster. He married his high school sweetheart, Linda M. Wise, on Dec. 2, 1966.
He was a graduate of Grove City High School, Class of 1963, where he was a football player and member of the 1961 Mercer County Championship Team under Coach Dick Bestwick. Gary attended Slippery Rock University for a year and later joined the Marine Corps, graduating from boot camp in June of 1965.
He was proud to be a Marine and served for three years until 1968. While serving in Vietnam, Gary received a Purple Heart for wounds received in July of 1966.
Following his tour in Vietnam, Gary escorted 13 fellow Marines killed in action back to their homes.
He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.
Gary retired in January 2004 from General Electric of Grove City due to health problems following 30 years of service.
He was an 11-year survivor of a double lung transplant that he received in 2006.
Many friends and co-workers knew of his sense of humor. He enjoyed hunting with family and his hunting buddy John Griffin.
Two proud moments in his life were meeting John Bradley, the Navy corpsman who raised the flag on Iwo Jima, and finding his foxhole Marine buddy after 50 years.
Gary is survived by his wife, Linda, at home; a daughter; Denise (Bill) Heeter, of Smithville, Ohio; two sons, Gary Webster Jr. of Valrico, Fla., and Jon Webster of Grove City; a granddaughter, Sara; a sister-in-law, Doris Webster of Grove City; and many nieces and nephews.
Gary is preceded in death by his parents; an infant son; three brothers, James, Robert and John Webster; and a sister-in-law, Milly Patterson.

Service: Funeral at 11 a.m. Thursday (1-11-18) at the church.
Burial: Woodland Cemetery, Grove City.
