Frank P. Savoldi, 94, formerly of West Middlesex, passed away in San Luis Obispo, Calif., on Sept 9, 2017.
He was born Aug. 22, 1923, in Sharon, the son of Giovanni and Domenica "Margaret" (Cozzaglio) Savoldi.
In the 1930s and 1940s, his parents operated the well- known Savoldi Inn and Savoldi Food Co., famous for their Italian cuisine.
After graduating in 1941 from Hickory High School, where he was a basketball star and president of his class, he went on to earn a bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois, where he was on the gymnastics team and in ROTC. At the start of World War II, he enlisted in the army, and served as a first lieutenant. He served in the First Cavalry, and was part of the occupational force in Japan and went to Hiroshima only three weeks after the atomic bomb. He remained in Japan during the occupation for more than a year.
In 1945, he married Gloria Root, an AP feature writer with the Louisville Courier Journal who later became a successful freelance writer, author of several young adult books and WFAR radio talk show host.
After the war, he graduated from Stetson University Law School and worked for eight years in Washington, D.C., as an attorney for the Department of Justice under Robert Kennedy. He was also a member of the Florida and Ohio State Bar associations. Later he moved back to Sharon and became a superintendent with State Farm Insurance., Youngstown, Ohio, and also taught business law at the university there. He was very practical, a hard worker, retiring from State Farm at 72, never taking a sick day in 33 years.
He loved nature, children, and animals. Two favorite pastimes were fishing and hunting.
His family and devoted caregiver, Faline Gallagher, will greatly miss his enthusiasm for life, sunny, outgoing personality, warm smile and sparkling blue eyes, great sense of humor and generosity. He was quick to help others, and often helped his Amish friends with legal matters.
He is survived by nieces and nephews Maria Savoldi Williams, Lisa Savoldi Daley, John Savoldi; sister-in-law, Martha Savoldi; daughter, Margaret Censullo and son-in-law, Albert, of San Luis Obispo; son, Frank Savoldi, Jr. of West Middlesex; granddaughters, Marissa Censullo of Arroyo Grande, Calif., and Andrea Censullo-Disque, M.D., of Los Angeles; and his new great-granddaughter, Emily Angelina Disque, born in 2017 on the same day as his birthday.
