Frank E. Chess

Events

Frank E. Chess Jr., of Hermitage, passed away unexpectedly during his sleep early Friday morning, May 3, 2019. He was 82.
Mr. Chess was born Nov. 26, 1936, in Farrell, a son of the late Frank E. Chess Sr. and Jennie (Rotell) Chess.
He was a 1954 graduate of Farrell High School and earned his bachelor's degree in education from Clarion State Teachers College.
Frank began his career as a teacher at Brookfield High School then worked as a craneman at Sharon Steel's former Farrell plant, where he was employed for more than 30 years.
He retired from the former Trinity Industries, Greenville, and drove for Hovis Auto Parts in Hermitage during his retirement.
Frank was a longtime active member of the Church of Notre Dame, Hermitage, where he attended the 8:15 a.m. mass on Sunday. He was also a former member of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Farrell, where he received his sacraments and married his wife, the former Betty L. Hogg, on Nov. 14, 1959.
Frank was an avid sports fan his entire life and always ready for the next event. He served as the manager for the state champion Farrell High Steeler basketball team, under the direction of legendary coach Edward J. McCluskey, and continued in this role as the manager of the Clarion Golden Eagles basketball team during college.
Although Frank remained a fan of Farrell High basketball throughout his life, he also followed other local basketball teams, most recently the Hickory Hornets.
His unlimited passion for sports also included Major League Baseball as a Pittsburgh Pirates fan, following football and watching the Masters and the Kentucky Derby. He was fortunate to attend a World Series game and the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.
Frank will be remembered most, however, for his love of the outdoors.
He looked forward to the changing seasons and the next fishing or hunting trip. He traveled throughout North America, Canada and Pennsylvania hunting and fishing and enjoying the time he shared with his sons and friends.
His most recent excursions were fishing for trout on opening day in the Allegheny Mountains and a successful turkey hunt last week in Wyoming with his lifelong friend, Dick Stigliano.
Frank was a member of Ducks Unlimited and the Wild Turkey Federation.
Surviving are his wife, Betty L. Chess; a daughter, Amy Elizabeth Krysiek and her husband, David, of Atlanta, Ga.; a son, Edward W. Chess and his wife Cynthia, of Hermitage; grandchildren, William, Elizabeth and Benjamin Krysiek; Emily Forrest and her husband David, Megan Chess, Matthew Chess and Lauran Schmidt.
He also leaves a special niece, Jennifer Bachorous and her husband Donald, of Cleveland, Ohio.
Besides his parents, Frank was preceded in death by a son, Frank E. Chess III; and a sister, Marcy DeCarmen.
The family suggests memorial contributions be directed to the Church of Notre Dame, 2325 Highland Road, Hermitage, PA 16148.
