Dr. Louis's Story
Dr. Louis Razzano died June 11, 2017, just shy of his 85th birthday.
He was a resident of Grove City since 1965. He was born in Monongahela, Pa., in 1932 to Francesco and Elena Morra Razzano, both of whom were Italian immigrants. He graduated from Monongahela High School and from California University of Pennsylvania. His graduate degrees were earned at the University of Pittsburgh.
Dr. Razzano began his career as an English teacher at Monongahela High School, where he eventually became head of the department. In 1965, he joined the faculty of Slippery Rock University. He retired from the university in 1996, having served as associate provost and associate vice president for academic affairs. In addition to his administrative position, he was professor of English and professor of library science.
For 26 years, Dr. Razzano served as the university's liaison with the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and was selected to serve on the evaluation teams to assess other colleges and universities within its region of the eastern U.S.
He received an honorary doctorate from Puschino State University in Russia where he also was as a guest lecturer at the University of Obninsk.
His efforts on behalf of scholarship funding at SRU led to the establishment of five endowed scholarships. In addition, he raised more than $2 million for scholarships and student assistance during his tenure at SRU.
Dr. Razzano was as a member of the Pennsylvania Governor's Council on Public Library Access and was a founding director of the Western Pennsylvania Higher Education Council. He also served six years as a member of the Grove City Area School Board.
Dr. Razzano was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Frank. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Virginia; his daughter, Rhonda (Bill) Andronico of Lafayette, Calif.; his son, Louis Razzano of Hermitage; and five granddaughters, Kendall, Lauren and Grace Andronico and Shauna and Kelsie Razzano.
Memorial remembrances may be made to the Slippery Rock University Foundation, Slippery Rock, PA 16057, in support of the Louis Razzano Memorial Scholarship for students majoring in English.
