Darla's Story

Text size

Darla Joyce McKay, 73, of Greenville, and Naples, Fla., passed away Friday, July 28, 2017, in Family Hospice in Pittsburgh, beating all the odds against her and all the expectations given to her after a gallbladder cancer diagnosis 10 months ago.
Darla was born in Youngstown on Feb. 8, 1944, to the late Dorothy Lucille (George) Humphrey.
Darla graduated from Greenville Senior High School in 1962.
She worked at Werner Ladder for many years and retired from Pelican Bay in Naples, Fla.
Darla lived her life with a hilarious sense of humor and had an amazing positive outlook; she always made the best out of the worst situations.
She loved animals, especially her cats, Millie, Mollie, and Sammie, and supported several animal rescues.
Darla had an amazing green thumb, especially with her orchids. She loved laughing, cruising, going to the movies, and spending time with friends and family, especially her grandkids. She loved fresh air and being outside.
She made the best homemade pizza around.
Surviving are: her husband at home, Bruce J. McKay, whom she married Sept. 25, 2005; a son, Joseph Jayne III, and his fiancee, Tonya Hmelar, of Naples, Fla.; three daughters, Margaret "Shelly" Gessler of Jamestown, Darcie Loreno of Cleveland, and Deanna Loreno of Greenville; a stepdaughter, Stacy McKay, and her husband, John, also Greenville; a stepson, Matt McKay, and his wife, Megan, Columbus, Ohio; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a brother, James Lowry of Greenville.
In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her stepfather, Carl Humphrey, and a grandson, David M. West.
Gifts can be made to UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, for gallbladder cancer research, at UPMC Cancer Pavilion, Suite 1B, 5150 Centre Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15232, or to Strayhaven Animal Shelter, 94 Donation Road, Greenville, PA 16125.
