Barbara "Bobbie"'s Story
Barbara Ann Powell Stitt, 93, formerly of 42 Columbia Ave., Greenville, passed away on Friday, Sept. 1, 2017 in the St. Paul's Villas, Greenville.
She was born Dec. 30, 1923, in Waynesburg, Pa., to Margaret and Edward Powell. She attended Waynesburg College, earning her BA in English by 1945. Barbara, or "Bobbie" as she was known to family and close friends, was employed 1946-1951 at Equitable Life Assurance Co. in Harrisburg, then TWA in Pittsburgh, before her marriage to Donald G. Stitt, M.D., in July 1951, and becoming a full-time housewife and mother. She was married for 61.5 years.
Barbara faithfully attended First Presbyterian Church of Greenville, serving first as a Sunday school teacher, then as elder, then Women's Circle chair.
Barbara also served as President of AARP 4054 for the Greenville-Lakeland area.
She is survived by a younger sister, Mrs. Peggy Murdock, of Waynesburg, Pa.; two daughters, B. Leslie Stitt Moody and her husband, USMC Ret. Lt. Col. Bruce R. Moody, of Stafford, VA, and Judith V. Stitt, of Cambridge, Mass; a son, Edward T. Stitt and his wife, Dr. W. Zoe Stitt, with their three children, Audrey, Bobby, and Suzie, of Brookline, Mass.
Barbara will best be remembered for her rock-solid faith in her Lord Jesus Christ, and for her deep enjoyment of reading. She was loved by family, friends, and neighbors for her generosity with gourmet home-cooking, as well as her gifts of spiritual insights, humor, recipes, and self-help knowledge. Her appreciation of beauty was reflected in her gardening, and in her love of music. Assorted stray dogs and cats somehow found their ways to her care, adding to her enjoyment of life.
Bobbie was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband, and her older sister, Dr. Catherine Simmers, late of Medina, Ohio, formerly of Red Bank, NJ.
Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 323 Main St., Greenville, PA 16125 or St. Paul's Development Office, 341 E, Jamestown Road, Greenville, PA 16125.
