Anthony J. Hnida, 50, of Wheatland, passed away at 7:59 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 14, 2017) in Presbyterian Medical Center, Pittsburgh, after a short illness with his wife and son by his side.
Anthony was born on May 5, 1967, in Sharon to William Hnida and Josephine (Direnzo) McLaren.
He married Kimberly L. Yurcich on Oct. 21, 1995, at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Sharon. Together they shared a happy home with their son, Antonio Michael.
He graduated from Farrell High School in 1986 and the police academy at Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1987.
Anthony served as a police officer, first as a patrolman for Wheatland Borough, and beginning in 1989 as a deputy sheriff for the Mercer County Sheriff's Department where, among his other duties, he served on the Mercer County Drug Task Force. Prior to starting his law enforcement career he worked in loss prevention for Sears.
He retired from the sheriff's department in 2007 to dedicate himself to his family after his mother-in-law, Antionette (Yurcich) Egelsky, passed away in January of that year.
Anthony's love of law enforcement and the community shone throughout his career. There was never a time he wouldn't stop to talk or "remember when" to catch up with family and friends, both on the force and off. He went out of his way to make people laugh and feel comfortable, and whether you knew him or not, you couldn't help but to feel included.
He was of the Catholic faith and a member of the Italian Home and New Deal Club in Farrell. As a youth Anthony was an avid boxer and enjoyed watching football. He also enjoyed spending time with his wife and son hunting or just being together with their two dogs, Cloe and Pita, and their rescue cat, Miss Kitty.
Anthony was most proud of his son's decision to become a Marine, which he did, earning the title and prestigious Eagle, Globe and Anchor on Sept. 8, 2017.
He is survived by: his wife and son. He also leaves to cherish his memory: his brother, John Jelinek of Hermitage; sister Deborah Nevant (James), Farrell; Jeanne Rotunno (Daniel), Hermitage; Mary Lou Cook, Chicago; William Hnida (Sarah), Pulaski; and Cathy Matjek (Rick), Sharpsville; sister-in-law, Kelley Yurcich (Chris), Greenville; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, all of whom he was close to.
He was also a faithful friend to many both on and off the police force. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered through the countless stories and treasured memories of all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
