Text size

Albert Carl Sunday Jr., 88, of Jefferson Township, died at 4:43 p.m. Friday (Dec. 1, 2017) after being under hospice care for six months.
Though in a battle for many years against many medical odds, Al trusted Our Lord humbly and without complaint as he lived with hope. His example of "strength in weakness" and quiet wisdom will be remembered by all. He battled polycythemia vera since 1983.
Al was born Sept. 28, 1929, in Buhl Hospital, Sharon, to Albert Carl Sunday Sr. and Grace Holcroft Sunday.
He attended Sharon and Hickory schools and worked at General American Transportation Co. as a painter for 29 years, retiring on Feb. 15, 1985.
A Korean War Veteran, he served as a staff sergeant in the communications division of the 28th Division in Camp Atterbury, Ind.
Albert was a proud member of the National Rifle Association, Ducks Unlimited and the American Legion Mercer Post 159. He owned Otter Creek Beagles and belonged to the Sharpsville Beagle Club serving as president for many years. An outdoorsman he enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping.
Al loved his family immensely and enjoyed time shared with them. He will be dearly missed by all who loved him.
On June 6, 1958 he married the former Betty Joan Morrison, who survives at the residence.
"Pa," as he was affectionately known by his family, is also survived by: one daughter, Linda Sue Opitz and her husband, Gordon Keith Opitz, Gibsonia; and two grandchildren, Kyle Albert Opitz, Gibsonia, and Kelley Alene Prentice and her husband Ryan Prentice, Pittsburgh. A close brother-like cousin, Anson Holcroft and his wife Henrietta of Hermitage and several nieces and nephews also survive Al.
He was preceded in death by: his parents, grandparents; and four sisters and their husbands, Dorothy and Emerson "Bud" Careless, Reida and Raymond Rohrdanz, Norma and Joseph Meszaros, and infant Alberta Sunday.
The family would like to send special thanks for the wonderful care provided by Dr. George, Dr. Kosic, Hermitage Rite Aid employees and everyone from Sharon Regional Hospice.
Memorial contributions can be made to: Sharon Regional Hospice, 1955 E. Shenango Valley Freeway, Hermitage, PA 16148 or to the Mercer United Methodist Church, 250 E. Butler St., Mercer, PA 16137.
